Overview

The foreigner's path to the CNPJ

Opening a company in Brazil as a foreigner is entirely possible — the secret is to obtain the documents in the correct sequence. We have gathered everything here in six clear steps.

For an immigrant to do business in Brazil, some documents must exist before the company is opened: the migratory registration, the temporary CPF and the e-CPF digital certificate. With these three in hand, the CNPJ registration flows without obstacles. TF inter guides you through the entire journey — indicating what to arrange at each stage and handling the bureaucracy with the authorities.

Before you begin, the ideal is to already be connected with our team. That way, we follow you in real time, avoid rework and ensure that each document comes out correct the first time.

  • Clear sequence: migratory registration → temporary CPF → e-CPF → CNPJ.
  • The TF inter team at every step, via WhatsApp or WeChat.
  • Guidance on the specific requirements that apply to foreigners.

Step by step

The 6 steps to open your company

From arriving in Brazil to an active CNPJ — what to do at each stage and TF inter's role in every one of them.

Step 1 — Connect with our team

First of all, it is important to be in contact with the TF inter team. That way, we help you obtain all the documents needed to open your company in Brazil, in the right order and without mistakes. You can talk to us through:

Step 2 — National Migration Registration Card (CRNM)

If you are a foreigner immigrating to Brazil, the first and most important document is the National Migration Registration Card (CRNM). It is with this document that you obtain the CPF with Temporary classification, the basis for all the registrations that follow.

Step 3 — A1 digital certificate for your e-CPF

With the temporary CPF in hand, the next step is to acquire the A1 digital certificate for your new e-CPF. It lets you sign documents and access government services securely — an essential condition for registering the company.

e-CPF (A1 certificate)

Digital certificate for individuals, ideal for signing documents and accessing government services. Issued by videoconference, valid throughout Brazil.

  • Requirement for issuance by videoconference: National Migration Registration Card.
  • Please note: if you are a foreigner, first arrange the visa with a temporary CPF and schedule the in-person verification. If you already have a CNH (Brazilian driver's license), the in-person step is waived.
  • Important: ask the attendant to speak with the TF inter team on WhatsApp and we will follow the issuance with you.

Step 5 — Documents you must send

To open the company, provide our team with the following data and documents:

A. National Migration Registration Card
The document that already contains your temporary CPF number.
B. e-CPF
The digital certificate you acquired in the previous step.
C. Proof of residential address
If possible, a copy of the electricity, water or phone bill for your residence in Brazil.
D. Proof of the company's address
A copy of the electricity, water, phone bill or property tax bill (IPTU) for the location where the company will operate — preferably the IPTU.

Step 6 — Information about the company

Finally, provide the TF inter team with the details that define the company's profile:

E. Expected monthly revenue
What is the company's estimated monthly revenue?
F. Number of employees
How many employees will the company have?
G. Company activities
What activities will the company perform?
H. Number of partners
How many partners (owners) will the company have?
I. Trade name
What will the company's trade name be?
J. Legal name
What will the company's legal name be?
K. Sales channel
Will the company sell only via e-commerce or will it also have a physical store?
Gathered everything? Once you have arranged the documents and information above, talk to us. From there TF inter takes care of the registration, the enrollments and the issuance of the CNPJ.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from foreigners

The most common questions from immigrants who want to do business in Brazil.

What is the first document I need?

The National Migration Registration Card (CRNM). It is with this card that you obtain the CPF with temporary classification, the starting point for all the registrations that follow.

Do I need to go in person to issue the e-CPF?

If you are a foreigner, first arrange the visa with a temporary CPF and schedule the in-person verification. However, if you already have a CNH (Brazilian driver's license), the in-person step is waived and issuance can be done by videoconference.

Which proof of the company's address is accepted?

A copy of the electricity, water, phone bill or property tax bill (IPTU) for the location where the company will operate. We give preference to the property's IPTU.

Can I sell only over the internet?

Yes. At the opening we define whether the company will sell only via e-commerce or will also have a physical store — this affects the tax framework and the registrations required.

In which languages does TF inter provide service?

We provide service in Portuguese, Chinese, English and Spanish, via WhatsApp and WeChat, following you on every document.
